nerd fest

I actually can't believe I'm putting some of these up, but they are too good not to. The other day, Jonathan's Mom brought out a couple pairs of her old glasses, and we just couldn't resist trying them on. We think we look pretty good - what do you think?

*disclaimer: I in no way am implying that my mother-in-law is a "nerd," in fact when she wore these I am sure they were very stylin' for the time. Also, she was watching this whole thing and laughing harder than anyone...

we got kicked out of the Mac store...

Yesterday morning, Josh texted Jonathan and said that they were having a grand opening event at the Simply Mac store, and that they were giving away some iPods and a Macbook - all you had to do was go into the store and they would give you a scratch card - you scratch it off and enter the code into the computer, and it tells you if you won anything. Josh and Dad stopped by that morning, and Josh won a t-shirt - so we decided to go and try to win something, too! I didn't win anything, but Jonathan won a t-shirt.

There was a sign at the store that said something like, "two cards per person per turn," so Jonathan went back later and tried again - I was hoping he could win me a t-shirt (of course a Macbook would be nice, too!) but he didn't win. After dinner last night we thought, "hmmm, maybe we should go try again!" We figured that we might as well, the store closed at 9, and we didn't think anyone had won the computer yet, so we thought we might as well try again. Sadly, I didn't win anything, but Jonathan won a t-shirt for me. We went to my parents' for a visit, and Annie and Josh were there - Josh had already gone twice, but Annie hadn't yet, so Josh, Annie, me and Jonathan decided to go back and enter the contest again. Either we were super bored or we just really wanted to win some cool stuff - either way, it was really random and lots of fun. So we all went, I stayed in the car with James while they all went in - Josh won another t-shirt (I think it was his third of the day!), but that was about it. They got back in the car and convinced me to just go in and try - it was semi-awkward, because there were NO other customers in the store, and it was the same guy who had been there the last time we were there - but the sign said "two cards per customer per turn," so we figured it was ok. I won a t-shirt (yay) and gave it to Annie.

As we were driving away, I was telling them how when I was in the store, the employees were talking about how the laptop hadn't been won yet. It was like 8:50, and so we turned around and Josh and Jonathan were convinced to go back in and try one more time. They were scared to go back in because there was NO ONE in the store and they had just been there, but they went in anyway, just to try. It was hilarious, like two seconds after they went in we saw them walking out. Josh had this big huge smile on his face and they were both laughing. Apparently the guys had told them they couldn't do it again because they'd been there before - so they pretty much got kicked out. It was the funniest thing, and quite the random outing, but we had fun. So, we got no laptop but we all got some pretty cool t-shirts!

My favorite book of all time is Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown. I have loved this book ever since I was a little girl; I think it may have been this book that resulted in my need to see the moon each night before I went to sleep - my Dad would wrap me in a blanket and carry me outside to see it. We have got like four or five copies of this book in our home, and we read it to James regularly - he is getting to the point where he really enjoys books, and he even points at the mouse in the picture! So cute. It's kind of crazy how these things come full circle!

Well, tonight Jonathan and I were playing around with the computer, and we noticed that it has a voice recognition program. In theory, instead of typing a document, you just speak the words out loud and the computer types it for you. Jonathan went through the little tutorial and learned a little bit about it, and then we just tried it out with a blank word processing document. I decided it would be fun to recite Goodnight Moon (because I have it memorized, of course) and see what the computer picks up.

Just in case you're not familiar with this book, here is how the text really goes:

So, pretty simple, right? A computer, with its advanced technology, could totally pick up these simple words and repetitive phrases. Well, here is our voice-dictated computer version. Really, it is amazing how close it came to the original. Oh, and my favorite parts are the part about Iraq, the pianist, "goodnight BS" and the "bowl full of months."
