Who else loves this weather?? I LOVE that it is rainy and cold, and by extension it is comfy and cozy inside our little house. I have a loaf of bread in the bread maker, so it smells all yummy in here. It all makes me want to curl up on the couch and watch an old movie and drink hot cocoa.

how'd my kid get so smart?
Does your child ever surprise you with something you didn't realize he knew? It seems like lately James' vocabulary has been growing SO much, it's like his brain is having a massive growth spurt.
Today we went to the music store so I could pick up a few things I needed (did I mention I'm the new ward choir director?? - wish me luck!). Anyway, at this store they have a little children's play area (here's my plug for this awesome music store - best one out there!), so James was playing with some toys in there. There was a poster on the wall of Elmo, and, to our surprise, James pointed up at it and said, "E-mo!" We have absolutely NO recollection of introducing James to Elmo. EVER. So we thought, either our kid is a REAL genius and he can READ (hehe), or else maybe he saw Elmo once and just has a REALLY good memory! Either way...what a smart boy! I can say that because I'm his mommy, and proud to be so :)
Later today he surprised me a couple of other times with his great memory. He pulled out some books from his shelf that we haven't read in quite awhile, and when he saw this one...
...he said, "La la la!" I was quite surprised, and impressed, that he remembered this was a book about singing. I mean, the [creatures - are they mice??] are singing on the front cover, but you can't really tell, except for the music in their hands - so maybe he knows what music looks like? :)
Then he grabbed this book...
...which we haven't read in quite some time, and excitedly said, "Boose!!"
And THEN, he opened up this book...
...and turned to the last page (you know, the one that says, "...Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night?") and he said, "Night night!"
Wow, I was just so impressed. And I just had to brag :)
Ok I'm done.

Moo?
Tonight James was INCREDIBLY tired because he refused to nap today. After dinner we went outside to play, which made him happy. The kid was running all over the place, rolling around on the grass, turning around in circles and laughing like crazy. I tried to take some pictures of him but they mostly turned out blurry because he was running all over the place! (Luckily I got a few good ones :))
Finally I said it was time to go inside, and he kept falling over and giggling and making me drag him inside. He was lying on the grass on his tummy, when all of a sudden he reached down with his mouth and took a BIG BITE of grass. Like, how a cow would.

yummy crock pot soup!
I love trying out new recipes, and I tried a winner yesterday and thought I'd share!
The recipe is for Smashed Potato Soup that you make in the crock pot. I got it from this website. I also made Golden Flax Bread to go with it - which sounds impressive but is totally cheating because I made it in the bread maker! Oh well, what better thing to wake up to in the morning than the smell of homemade bread (AND it only took about FIVE minutes of prep time)? I've been making this bread recipe for awhile and we love it! I also thought I'd whip up some Honey Butter to go with it. Yummy!
Here are the recipes....hope you enjoy!
Smashed Potato Soup
Ingredients
3-1/2 pounds potatoes, peeled and cut into 3/4-inch cubes
1/2 cup chopped yellow and/or red sweet pepper
1-1/2 teaspoons bottled roasted garlic
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
4-1/2 cups chicken broth
1/2 cup whipping cream, half-and-half, or light cream
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
1/2 cup thinly sliced green onions
Sliced green onions for garnish (optional)
Directions
In a 4- to 6-quart slow-cooker, combine potatoes, sweet pepper, garlic, and black pepper. Pour broth over all.
Cover and cook on low-heat setting for 8 to 10 hours or high-heat setting 4 to 5 hours. (I did it on high for an hour and a half, then low for 5 hours.)
Mash potatoes slightly with a potato masher. Stir in whipping cream, cheddar cheese and the 1/2 cup sliced green onions. If desired, top individual servings with additional green onions. Serves 8.

7/8 cup water
2 Tablespoons butter
3 Tablespoons molasses
1 teaspoon salt
2 Tablespoons milled flax seed
2-1/2 cups bread flour (I used 2 cups white flour and 1/2 cup wheat - I may use more wheat next time)
1-1/2 Tablespoons non-fat dry milk
1-1/2 teaspoons fast rise yeast
Directions
Add ingredients to the bread machine in the order suggested by the manufacturer (I do it in the order listed here). Select basic cycle with a light or medium color setting. Yield: 1-1/2 pound loaf.

1/2 cup butter, softened
1/2 cup honey
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
Directions
Mix all ingredients together. I actually made about half this much for our little family.

Hugs
This morning as we were getting ready for church, I was rushing around trying to get dinner in the crockpot and trying to do my hair. James kept saying "Mama?? Mama??" and I would respond with "Just a minute, Bud!" This continued on for awhile, when he finally came to the door of the bathroom and grabbed onto the door frame. He kind of squished his body up against it and held on really tight. I asked, "what are you doing?" He said "HUG."
So I scooped him up and gave him a big old hug that lasted forEVER (this kid LOVES hugs lately - he gives great ones!). It was so sweet and a good little reminder of what is most important. I just love my little boy.

"Have you ever played for a prophet?"
Today I had a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I was asked to play the organ for the funeral of a woman in our ward. (Once everyone in our ward discovered I am a musician, the phone calls just started coming! I am glad though, it is so nice to feel needed!)
The woman who passed away was the widow of Paul H. Dunn, a former general authority of the Church. I figured that there had to be some general authorities at the funeral (and as I walked into the church building I saw a man standing outside in a black suit, all official-looking, and I wondered if he was some security guy for some important person who was coming)... Boy was I right....
As I played the prelude music, my bishop came up to me and said hi, and then he smiled and said, "So, have you ever played for a prophet?" "He's coming??" I asked, and he replied, "he's already here!"
Wow, what an experience. It was so amazing to see the Prophet of God in person. Also, he's really tall. And a wonderful speaker - he seems to let loose a little and tell more jokes when he's not speaking in general conference.
I have to say that I am so so glad I took the organ class at BYU, even though it has been SO long since I've taken it (and quite awhile since I've even played an organ). Man, I have such the renewed appreciation for organists. Playing the organ is HARD. Seriously, people. I practiced for quite awhile this week and got the pedals down for the opening hymn ("Be Still, My Soul") but I have to admit that I cheated and used the bass coupler on the closing hymn. After I found out President Monson was there, I got a little stressed, and on the opening song I had a few little issues with the organ (particularly the VOLUME pedal - I NEVER know if it's too loud or soft...stressful...), but overall it went pretty well. I can't wait to practice the organ more and get better at it (I am assistant ward organist, so I'll have an excuse!).

Victories of Mommyhood
My child ate applesauce!
I know this may not seem so amazing, but seriously, it is! My kid is such a picky eater. His entire food repertoire consists of graham crackers and milk, apple juice, Gerber oatmeal, grapes, graham crackers and milk (yes this is his favorite), chicken nuggets and mashed potatoes. Ok, ok, so there ARE more things he will eat, but sometimes it seems like he won't eat ANYTHING. And yes, he used to eat applesauce all the time when he was a baby, so I have no idea why he wouldn't eat it for ages.
But today, he ate it! And he liked it! I made it into a game and we said "1, 2, 3!" and put our spoons (full of applesauce) in our mouths as fast as we could. He was hesitant at first, but once he got a tiny lick of it he said, "Mmmmm!" I am so happy. It's funny the things that make you happy when you are a mommy :)
Now onto veggies...

happy AUTUMN!
I was just sitting here and realized that tomorrow is the first day of autumn! This is happy for many reasons, like:
1) I really don't like summer all that much. It is just too hot and sunny for me. I much prefer cooler weather, and I much prefer cloudy days to sunny days.
2) There is something comfy-cozy about autumn and winter that I just LOVE. I can't wait to build a fire in our fireplace and drink hot cocoa!
3) Autumn/winter clothes are cuter than summer clothes - I just love a cute sweater.
4) This is when all the HOLIDAYS begin! I love the holidays. In our little family, fall/winter is holiday central (when you include birthdays and other such events in the holiday category). It all started last week with Jonathan's birthday. For me, General Conference has always been like a holiday - I love it so much! That is in a couple of weeks. Then comes my birthday in mid-October, Halloween, of course (which we LOVE - see here, here, here and here), Thanksgiving (can't wait to go to Oregon and eat tons of pie!), then James' 2nd birthday at the beginning of December, our 4th anniversary on the 20th of December, then Christmas and New Years of course. Now that is a lot of celebrating. I can't wait! :)

On Saturday we had fun celebrating Jonathan's birthday with family and friends, and enjoyed an evening of playing Beatles Rock Band. Looks like we've got a little singer on our hands...he loves to hold the microphone up to his mouth and sing "la la la!" Maybe he'll be a great singer like his Uncle Benjamin!
um, awkward!!!
As James was eating lunch today I was unloading the dishwasher. He saw something he liked in the dishwasher and started pointing and saying, "boob! boob!" Huh?!? Um, awkward... For the life of me I could not figure out what the kid was pointing at. I pointed to everything in the dishwasher and asked "is this it?" - nothing was it. He just kept on saying "boob! boob!"
I finally realized what he was pointing at - the plastic funnel/tube thing in the middle of the dishwasher that the water sprays out of. He was saying tube! Lately we have had lots of fun playing with cardboard paper towel tubes.
We'll have to make sure he gets the word "tube" down, or else that could lead to some awkward moments...

Fall is in the air!
Oooh, I love it! Tonight I turned off the AC and opened all the windows to let the breeze in - and it just smells like fall! Makes me want to put on a sweater and drink some hot cocoa. Or at least jump in a pile of leaves. I just love this time of year!!

Dear Aunt Baba,
Just wanted to let you know that James is lying in his bed (supposedly trying to take a nap) yelling, "Baba!? Baba!?" over and over.
And he keeps asking me (just to be sure) if you are coming to his Daddy's birthday party this weekend.
He just can't wait to see you! I thought that might make you feel good :)

ohhhh....somebody's had a birthday!
That's right - Jonathan is one year older and wiser too as of yesterday! HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BABE!! I just love my husband, he is so great and sweet and I love him so much that I thought I should get him a really fun birthday present - which we have been enjoying in all our spare moments ever since.
If anyone wants to play, come on over! Our hands are sore from playing so much "guitar" and James rocks on the vocals (he just loves picking up that microphone and singing "la la la!").
As for other birthday celebratory activities, we have enjoyed eating an entire Marie Callenders pie (banana cream) in under 24 hours, staying up way past our bedtime (ok, we were playing Beatles Rock Band - but also watching Lost), and spending time together. Jonathan's great co-workers even got him a cake!

Amazing Makeshift Peach Cobbler
Thanks everyone for all the sweet comments - we really appreciate it! Life is good.
I thought I'd share an awesome recipe we sort of...came up with...the other day. Anyone tried the dutch oven peach cobbler recipe where you layer peaches, cake mix and 7up? Well, we have and we love it - it tastes great and is so simple. The other day I was so craving some peach cobbler - but didn't quite have all the ingredients. We made do with what we had, and it turned out delicious! Here's the recipe:
Ingredients
Peaches (we just used a store-bought 16 oz. can)
Blueberry muffin mix (we used the Betty Crocker kind where you just add water & it makes a small batch; we tried the Triple Berry flavor the 2nd time and liked Blueberry better)
Cherry 7up
Drain out syrup from peaches can and dump peaches in a baking pan. Cover peaches with muffin mix. Pour cherry 7up over muffin mix until there are no dry parts left (we used about half the can).
Bake at 400 degrees for about 20 or 25 minutes.
Turns out delicious, oozing with purple amazingness.

why it's been awhile...
Yeah I know, I usually update this blog like every day or two! The past couple of weeks have been crazy and hard. Last Monday we went to the doctor for what was supposed to be my first prenatal appointment - I was about 8 1/2 weeks pregnant - and when my doctor did an ultrasound we weren't able to see a heartbeat. After more blood work and ultrasounds, we found out that it was, in fact, a miscarriage.
While it is definitely one of the hardest things we have had to deal with, I am so grateful for my sweet husband and family and friends who have been so kind. I have a much greater understanding of and sympathy for what so many women go through, and I have gained such a greater love and appreciation for our dear James.
Our weekend consisted of a lot of waiting around for it to happen, a lot of time spent with my two sweet boys, and a lot of movies and shows to get our mind off of things. James now enjoys Gilmore Girls as much as I do (in fact, Jonathan even watched quite a few episodes with me!) and excitedly says, "Girls?!?" and climbs on my lap when I start a new episode. We are also now newly-addicted to Lost, to which I can credit some crazy dreams about bears and things.
It's hard to move on when you are still waiting for a miscarriage to happen, so it was kind of a rough weekend. Monday I went in for a d&c and we were finally able to have some closure, for which we are so grateful. We are just so grateful for all the sweet phone calls and messages and emails and meals, and are now feeling much better and are ready to move on.
I am so glad that I have two amazing boys in my life! They are just wonderful :) Also on the up-side, I am enjoying my new burst of energy and am finally hoping to for real finish getting us all "moved in" - today I even got some family pictures framed and hung up. Stay tuned for pictures of our new home :)
While it is definitely one of the hardest things we have had to deal with, I am so grateful for my sweet husband and family and friends who have been so kind. I have a much greater understanding of and sympathy for what so many women go through, and I have gained such a greater love and appreciation for our dear James.

Naptime Struggles
Our silly boy has had trouble going to sleep for his nap the past few days. There is no doubt that he is exhausted and needs a nap, but he simply refuses to fall asleep. He'll be up in his room and I'll hear "thud! thud!" - he is throwing all of the contents of his bed onto the floor (the thud was his crib rail covers that I use to hold a blanket up to block the sun, and any books in his bed - he loves to read before bedtime!).
Yesterday I finally caved when he started crying and crying. When I got in his room to see what was the matter, there he was in his bed with his blankets, pillow, everything on the floor, except his big teddy bear (whom we affectionately call Bum Bum), which he was clinging to desperately. Poor Bum Bum was hanging out of the crib while James tried desperately to pull him back through the crib rails by his leg. James saw me and cried "Bum Bum!!" It was sad but oh so cute.
Today I put him down and thought all was well, when all of a sudden we hear cheerful yelling coming from his room. He was saying "Echo!!.......................Echo!!!" At least he can keep himself entertained... :)
