like father like son

Today Jonathan tuned our piano and James wanted in on the action! (hehe...no pun intended) He was just mesmerized watching the hammers move when he played the keys. It was the cutest thing. You can almost see the little wheels turning in his head as he figures out how things work. It's so fun seeing my baby turn into a little boy and to see him hanging out with his Daddy. I can definitely see him being into gadgets (not to mention music!) like his Daddy.

my boys

James loves watching his Daddy shave in the morning, and I just find it so dang cute. Jonathan puts the cover of his razor on and pretends to "shave" James' face, too. I'm so glad my boys are such good buddies!

ohhhh....somebody's had a birthday!

That's right - Jonathan is one year older and wiser too as of yesterday! HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BABE!! I just love my husband, he is so great and sweet and I love him so much that I thought I should get him a really fun birthday present - which we have been enjoying in all our spare moments ever since.

If anyone wants to play, come on over! Our hands are sore from playing so much "guitar" and James rocks on the vocals (he just loves picking up that microphone and singing "la la la!").

As for other birthday celebratory activities, we have enjoyed eating an entire Marie Callenders pie (banana cream) in under 24 hours, staying up way past our bedtime (ok, we were playing Beatles Rock Band - but also watching Lost), and spending time together. Jonathan's great co-workers even got him a cake!

Hope you had a great day, Babe! I love you!

To My Husband

Happy Fathers Day to my sweet, funny, smart, handsome husband and the father of my son. I am so lucky to have you, and so is James! :) I couldn't ask for a better father for my children. Thanks for making me laugh and being such a wonderful man. Love you, Babe!

My Hero

This afternoon as I was sitting in our family room, I heard a suspicious buzzing noise in the corner. Turns out it was a huge wasp! It started angrily flying around the room and pretty much just freaked me out. I guess I have a thing with bees and wasps - I'm not sure why, I've never even been stung (knock on wood), but they just freak me out. That is, bees and moths. Man, I hate moths. One summer I was home from BYU and was attending the singles ward in our area, and we had a Relief Society overnight retreat at a cabin. My good friend Kathleen and I were sleeping in a little bedroom and were up late playing Nerts. (I was attempting to beat her, which I don't think I have ever done, she is amazing at that game - I still want a rematch!) There were a bunch of moths going crazy and flying around the lights, so we finally decided to just turn off the lights and go to sleep. I still remember this so vividly, it was such a traumatic experience - it was pitch black in the room, and all of a sudden we started hearing the moths' little wings flapping like crazy. Then, I kid you not, these moths started to dive bomb us. Seriously, they were like kamakaze moths, just attacking us like crazy. I remember pulling the hood of my hoodie over my head and pulling the drawstrings tight, so my face was mostly covered (I would have covered the whole thing, but I thought it might be good to breathe...). The moths then flew at the part of my face that was uncovered!! I don't think we slept at ALL that night. There would be a few moments of silence, and then the wings would start flapping again, and one of us would start screaming. Man that was hilarious. Traumatic, yes, but hilarious. And that is why I hate moths. Anyway, back to the wasp in our family room today...

So there's a HUGE wasp in our family room. I called my family, and neither my brother or my dad were home. (This was definitely a job for a man.) I called up Jonathan at work and told him the situation, and my sweet husband came home during his lunch break to take care of the wasp for me. What a great guy! He didn't even make fun of me for being scared :) Before he got there, I trapped the wasp in between the window and the blinds, and then after awhile it got very quiet, so James and I went outside to see if it really was in the window. James was very helpful in looking for the wasp, and kept saying "Bee! Bee!" to help find it. It was a very exciting adventure for him.

Now that I think about it, this wasn't the first time Jonathan rescued me from a wasp. The day he met my family, we were walking into my family's kitchen and I was just introducing them, when all of a sudden my Mom freaked out and said, "Jonathan!! There's a wasp in Jenny's hair!!" So he took me outside and got rid of it. I just love that guy :)

Here is the wasp from today in the jar Jonathan caught it in. Gives me shivers just looking at it...

who's that cute boy? (plus, a priceless picture of my brother-in-law...)

Does this boy look familiar to anyone?

When my mother-in-law found this picture of Jonathan, I couldn't believe how similar he looks to James! What cute boys I've got. Here's a couple of pictures of James, to compare. I had to put the second one in because he's wearing almost the same outfit as his Daddy!

Here are some more great pictures of Jonathan as a toddler.

I couldn't NOT scan this next picture in and then put it up on our blog, it is just too hilarious. This is a picture of my brother-in-law, Benjamin. Looks like he was honing his musical skills even then.

A new job!

I just realized that I never posted on here about Jonathan getting a job! It happened last Friday, only five days after coming back to Salt Lake. Anyway, the job is for a pharmaceutical company, and we are SO excited and SO grateful that things worked out so quickly after coming back to Salt Lake. Yay! :)

The Next Victor Borge

For any of you who have never heard Jonathan play the piano, he is really good. He loves to play and has an amazing memory, he pretty much can remember any song he's ever learned. He is very talented. Well, those of you who know him know that he also has a great sense of humor. He loves to find funny ways to play the piano, like Victor Borge or the Marx Brothers. Here is his running-start rendition of Chopin's prelude no. 20 in C minor. Enjoy!

A Change in Halloween Plans - NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART

Since removing Jonathan's bandage from his surgery, we have decided that a change in our Halloween plans is in order. We can no longer be mummies and have decided to go as Frankenstein! Well, ok, not really - but Jonathan very well could with his ear all stitched up like it is! It is a bit of a gruesome sight, which is why I made the picture so small, so you can just scroll right past it and not have to see it so close if you choose. :) It sort of looks like his ear came off and was sewn back on!

Oh and p.s. he is doing alright, but is still really exhausted. He is getting more and more feeling back in his ear and so it is a bit painful - thank goodness for drugs!

Mummies, Lorna Doones and Prosthetics

I am sure you are wondering what mummies, Lorna Doone cookies and prosthetics have to do with each other. Well, I will tell you. It all has to do with our day yesterday - and what a crazy day it was! Let me start at the beginning...

A few weeks ago Jonathan had an ear ache. He has had ear trouble in the past (infections, swimmers ear) so we went to Instacare and got it looked at. The doctor took a look at it and immediately said "oh wow - yep, it's definitely infected." So he got an antibiotic and we went home.

A week later, he was almost done with his antibiotic but his ear was still hurting a lot. So we decided there must be something up with his ear, and we went to see an ear nose and throat doctor.

The doctor said that Jonathan had what is called a cholesteatoma. As far as we understand it, it is a type of skin cyst that forms in the ear and starts to eat away at and erode the bones in your ear. If it gets really bad, it can actually eat its way up into the brain (not cool) and damage facial nerves and stuff.

So, we were kind of surprised but so glad to have found the cause to all of his ear troubles, and glad to find it before it got too bad and damaged his hearing much. They did a hearing test and he has a bit of hearing loss in that ear, but nothing too bad.

We were also very glad, now that we found out about this, that Jonathan had not found a new job yet and that we had not moved, because we may have been between jobs and without insurance when we discovered this - in a way it was a little blessing in disguise - or at least it made us realize that the Lord is looking out for us, even if things don't work out exactly as we want.

So, he went the next week and had a CT scan. The results of this were promising - the radiologist said that the bone had only eroded a little bit, nothing too major. He wasn't even sure if it WAS a cholesteatoma (although the doctor was pretty sure it was). The doctor wanted to do surgery to get rid of the cyst and take care of it before it got any worse.

Yesterday was his surgery. My parents were so kind to watch James for the entire day, which helped SO much. We had to be at LDS Hospital at 5:30 in the morning!! Talk about early (well at least for me). We woke up our boy and took him down to my parents' house at quarter to five, and then went to the hospital.

The surgery was scheduled to last about two hours (and was an outpatient surgery). They took him back around 7:15 and I had a grand old time waiting in the family waiting room. It was actually pretty nice, they had free snacks and juice and hot chocolate for the family members. I was so excited when I saw that they had Lorna Doones - after James was born and I had been in labor for about 18 hours, I was STARVING, and the first thing the nurse brought me to eat was Lorna Doones - they tasted SO darn good to me, I have loved them ever since! Lorna Doones and cranberry juice (which is what they brought me to drink) - man, that tasted so good. Sadly, they didn't taste as good as I remembered (I guess that's what a whole day of labor will do to you - ANYTHING would taste good after being that hungry and exhausted!)

So I waited, I ate breakfast in the cafeteria (not too bad, actually) and I sat in the waiting room and read all sorts of magazines, and a book I brought. There were lots of people in the waiting room with me, including a nice-looking older gentleman with a prosthetic arm who kept thinking they were calling his name when instead they were calling "Becky" - it was kind of humorous. When he realized his mistake he said, "I sometimes go by Becky..."

So two hours came and went. I figured it had taken them a little time to put him under and prep him for surgery, but I wasn't sure how long. Three hours came and went and I have to admit I was a little worried! They kept calling people's names, but not mine! My friend with the prosthetic arm thought they called Ralph when they called Dave and stood up again - he again realized his mistake and we exchanged smiles.

Finally, I think it was around 11:00, Jonathan's doctor came in and found me. He seemed a little grim (although, as far as I have seen, he usually seems this way) and started explaining how the surgery went. His number one goal was to get rid of the cyst and all the skin that had grown in his ear. Apparently it was a lot worse than he had originally thought - he said the skin had grown all around his hearing bones.

He went on, and he said "since the number one important task was to get rid of the skin so it won't grow back, I took out two of the hearing bones."

Ok, when he said this I was thinking "WHAT?!? You took OUT his hearing bones??" I couldn't believe it. I wanted to say, "So . . . . did you put them BACK? Can he hear??" I had a small moment of being pretty worried and of freaking out.

But then the doctor told me that he had put in two PROSTHETIC HEARING BONES instead. And I felt much better. But how crazy is that?? (Ha, I tricked you, you thought the post title referred to the man with the prosthetic arm!) My husband pretty much now has a prosthetic ear! We didn't see that one coming at all. He said that once he recovers for about six weeks, his hearing ought to be "pretty darn good" (his exact words). Whew, that was a relief, except for the fact that I still can't believe that he REMOVED my husband's hearing bones. Wow, how crazy. Thank goodness for modern medicine.

Some other crazy things - the facial nerve runs right through that area of the ear, I guess, so that was a big risk of the cholesteatoma and of the surgery. But the doctor said that it was fine (what a relief - I like seeing my husband smile! Plus he's got a really impressive frowny face that he makes - I cannot frown like that for the life of me, it is really a talent that he has got!) Also, there are some tasting nerves (don't know the actual name) and one of them (there are four, apparently) got kind of stretched out, so his tasting might be a little off for awhile. In fact, just as I am writing this, Jonathan was telling me how good his Jell-O tasted that I made him. I said "good, I'm glad! It is strawberry-banana flavored." He said, "oh really? I thought it was cherry..."

So, anyway, the doctor is hopeful that he got all of the skin, but we still need to keep an eye on it and get it checked again in about a year to make sure it is not growing back.

So as you can probably guess, this turned into kind of a major surgery and was a bit risky. We are incredibly grateful that we discovered this problem when we did, or else it would have gotten much worse. I don't even like to think about what could have happened! We are hoping and praying that his hearing will be alright and that the cyst will not grow back. We would really appreciate your prayers.

Anyway, I finally got to see Jonathan and he had an awesome bandage all around his head. We decided that maybe we ought to re-think our Halloween costumes and go as mummies. He was a bit loopy as the orderly pushed him down the hall in the gurney and was saying some funny things in a really low voice. He was SO sleepy and was pretty nauseated. The drive home was quite exciting, seeing as how he felt sick whenever he moved.

But, we are home, and he is feeling a lot better after some pain medications and a good night's sleep. As is Gibbons family tradition when someone is sick, I made him a comfy "place" on the couch and he got a lot of rest. My cute visiting teacher brought us dinner and we were so grateful. We are supposed to take his bandage off today (I have to admit I am nervous), and we are going to have a fun few days just relaxing, watching movies and playing the Wii.

Here is his fabulous mummy garb. We think this has great Halloween possibilities. Or, we could use the hospital gown that we ended up bringing home (I wonder if they'll charge us? Oh well, can't be too expensive, especially compared to prosthetic ears!) and go as hospital patients. Anyway, here is my man all bandaged up. I am so proud of him, he had a rough time but is doing great.

James was looking at his Daddy kind of strangely when he got home. My parents had him the entire day and brought him home around bedtime, along with some "twirl town toys" -another Gibbons family tradition for sickies: my Dad often goes to the grocery store and picks up what he, for some reason, calls a "twirl town toy" for the sickie. These "twirl town toys" were a metal detector (man, my Dad sure knows how to buy gifts for Jonathan) and a movie. Thanks, guys! You are so sweet.

Happy Birthday, Babe!

Today was Jonathan's birthday - he turned 26! We had such a fun weekend together, we ended up celebrating all weekend long! On Saturday I made him sloppy joes for dinner (his request) and James and I sang happy birthday to him (ok, I sang to him), then we went to Coldstone for some ice cream. On Sunday my Mom made him a birthday dinner and we had cake and ice cream and he opened some fun presents from my family. Today Jonathan got the day off from work, we had so much fun spending the day together! He opened his presents from me this morning and then we had a fun day together, which we ended by eating out at Tucano's (my parents watched James for us). It had been quite awhile since Jonathan and I have been out together, just the two of us without a baby, and it was kind of nice! Of course we missed James a little, but he was having so much fun with Grandma and Grandpa that he didn't even miss us!

I love Jonathan so much, he is my best friend and I am so glad I married someone who is so much fun to be with. Love you, Babe!

Happy Fathers Day!

I just wanted to say Happy Fathers Day to all the fathers in my life! I am so thankful for my Dad, he is one of the wisest and kindest people I know! He is so much fun to be around and I could not have asked for a more awesome Dad. He is the greatest guy. I love you, Datty!

I am so blessed to have an AMAZING father-in-law. I love and look up to Jonathan's Dad so much, he is always so kind and supportive. I love how his family is his top priority - he is such an amazing man! I love you!

I have the best husband ever, I am so grateful for Jonathan and that he is such a great daddy to our little guy. I love you, Babe! Thanks for always being so sweet and supportive - I am so glad that James has such a great Dad to look up to. :)

We miss you, Daddy!

Jonathan had the opportunity to go to Idaho for work today, and it is so great because the job he had to do is only about a half hour away from his parents' house in Oregon, so he is staying with them tonight. We don't get to see them nearly as often as we would like, so he was so excited to be able to visit for a day!

James and I hung out with my family for a big portion of the day, though, and that was so much fun. Abby and I (and James) went shopping, and then we all had dinner and visited until just a little while ago. It is so fun to have my family so close!

It is kind of weird to have Jonathan gone, even for a short period of time - I think we have only been apart one weekend since we've been married! I left my parents' house and James and I got in the car and drove home (the VERY long drive of about one block :) hehe), and it was kind of weird to come home and not have Jonathan here too! I am so grateful to have such an amazing husband, and especially now that we have James I am incredibly grateful to be married to such a great guy, and that James has such a great Daddy. We miss you, Babe!

Here is a picture of James and I playing Mario Kart on the Wii with Grandpa - James, as you can imagine, was a BIG help during this race. We were playing with a bunch of people from around the world, and Dad and I were having a great time beating them (mostly...).

Here is my sleepy boy in his crib - he was so tired when we got home that he fell right asleep, with his puppy in his arms. What a cute kid. I'm so glad he's mine!

father & son

James and his Daddy are great pals - they love to hang out together and play games, and James gets so happy when Daddy comes home from work to play with him!

Here are my boys, hanging out, playing a little Wii together. James' outfit used to be Uncle Josh's, and it is the comfiest outfit ever. He's very cuddly in it. :)

my *sleepy* boys

I was up late last night chatting with one of my very best friends, Janina, online (love ya, Janina!) - it was so much fun! I sure miss her!! When I was done I went into the bedroom where my boys were sleeping, and I found this...

I had left a whole bunch of baby stuff on the bed, like James' car seat, a big box of diapers, etc. - and Jonathan was so sleepy he just kinda found a little corner to sleep on. Poor guy! It looked so funny though, I just had to take a picture. He is such a great guy, he is so patient with me, even when I am not the cleanest person ever (I am SO working on it!)

Then I went and checked on our little guy and he looked so darn cute, I had to take a picture of him, too. I think that watching babies sleep has got to be one of the best things ever, because they look so sweet and cute.

I love my boys!

our graduate

We had a great weekend - Jonathan graduated from BYU! He graduated with his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. I am so proud of my husband, he is such a hard worker and a smart guy, and I really admire the fact that he loves learning so much. This semester he has been working full-time and going to school full-time, and it has been pretty exhausting for him. I am so grateful for all he does for our little family! I'm so proud of you, Babe!

On Thursday was the big Commencement ceremony in the Marriott Center, and it was fun to hear Elder Bednar speak. Jonathan's parents and two of his sisters drove down on Thursday morning, and it was so fun to have them there and to have them stay with us! James did really well during the long day, but by the time Commencement was over he was SO sleepy! We had a cute little cap and gown for him to wear that Jonathan's Mom made for Kathleen and Jeff's first baby awhile back, and they sent it to us a few months ago! He looked SO cute in it, despite the fact that he was VERY tired and crying pretty hard - it actually made for some pretty funny pictures.

Here is James during the graduation - he looked so cute in his little BYU shirt and khaki pants. What a good-looking guy!

We enjoyed going out to eat with the Bosters and spending the evening with them at our house. It is so fun to have them come to town, we sure miss them!

On Friday was the Convocation ceremony when Jonathan got to walk across the stage! It was fun because my sister Liz also graduated, and she was in the same college as Jonathan, so they both walked at the same ceremony. Liz graduated magna cum laude in Biophysics, we are so proud of her! Liz you are so smart, we love ya!

James was a little more fussy during that ceremony and I had to take him out a few times, but by the time it was over and we were taking pictures, he was totally asleep - I was so glad I brought his little carrier so I could carry him around easily and he could sleep better. Here is our little family (with sleepy, sleepy son) after Daddy graduated!

On Friday we went out to eat with my family and had tons of fun - it was so fun to have such a great weekend and to be able to spend lots of time with both of our families! We love them so much!
